BUFFALO, N.Y. — A 33-year-old Buffalo man, Michael Robinson, has been sentenced to two years of probation and six months of home detention for his role in a mail theft conspiracy, according to U.S. Attorney Franz M. Wright.
The crime took place in the early morning hours of October 2, 2024, when Robinson drove his co-defendants, Lamor Runell Bolden and Antonio Jones, Jr., to a U.S. Postal Service facility in Cheektowaga. Once there, Jones used a stolen USPS mailbox key to open blue collection boxes, while Robinson stayed in the car, parked behind the row of mailboxes, acting as a lookout.
After leaving the scene, the vehicle was stopped by law enforcement. Officers discovered both opened and unopened mail inside the car. During questioning, Robinson admitted that he and his co-conspirators had used the stolen key to access mailboxes at other locations across Western New York.
Both Bolden and Jones have already been convicted and are awaiting sentencing.
This case highlights an increasing concern over mail security and key theft, as federal authorities continue to investigate similar schemes targeting postal collection boxes.
