CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A 33-year-old Coral Springs High School teacher, Joseph Michael Melendez, was arrested Thursday morning on charges of sexual battery and lewd and lascivious behavior involving a student during the victim’s freshman and sophomore years from 2018 to 2019, police confirmed.

Melendez, who supervised the after-school American Sign Language club, allegedly formed an emotional connection with the then 15-year-old student and admitted to a sexual relationship, according to an arrest report. The victim described Melendez as a “sexual mentor” after they exchanged phone numbers and discussed pornography. This illicit relationship reportedly lasted two years.

Following the arrest, parents expressed shock and concern. “I am honestly unaware of what’s been happening. I’m hoping to get information,” said one parent outside the school. Another added, “This is a great and safe school, but once we know the facts, we will determine any concerns.”

A school spokesperson confirmed Melendez’s termination, stating, “We were made aware today that a teacher at our school was arrested and has since been terminated. Student safety is our top priority. We direct any questions to our law enforcement partners in Coral Springs.”

Melendez is currently held at the Broward County Sheriff’s Office jail. Police are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Coral Springs Special Victims Unit.
