A driver employed by a local resident was arrested in Tawang for allegedly stealing his employer’s ATM card and withdrawing money from multiple locations across the Itanagar Capital Region. The accused, Kinto Basumatary, had been evading arrest since June by using at least two fake identities.
The theft came to police attention on June 19 after a complaint was filed at the Papu Hills Police Station. Authorities registered a case under Section 305(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigations led by SI A.K. Jha uncovered that Basumatary used aliases including Rahul Diamary and Nishanta Swargiary to move between Balipara, Bana, and a construction site near Madhuri Lake in Tawang.
Based on intelligence and assistance from Tawang Police, a team headed by Dy.SP Tasso Kato arrested Basumatary at Tawang Market while he was buying fuel. He is now in police custody and has been handed over to the investigating officer.
Superintendent of Police Dr. Nyelam Nega of ICR Naharlagun warned the public about the risks of hiring without proper background checks and advised verifying employee identities to avoid such frauds. The police also urged residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities to prevent identity-related crimes.
