The Andheri Railway Protection Force (RPF) team of Western Railway’s Mumbai Central Division arrested a mobile phone thief within 24 hours of the crime being reported.
On July 30, 2025, a commuter reported losing a mobile phone worth Rs 26,000 at Platform No. 3 of Andheri railway station. The special surveillance squad of Andheri RPF immediately launched continuous monitoring using CCTV cameras and on-ground vigilance across the station.
Their efforts paid off the next day when the team, including Head Constable Naveen Kumar and Constables Anuj, Ankit, and Deepak, spotted a suspicious individual on CCTV. The suspect was apprehended at Andheri station and questioned by RPF Sub-Inspector Anup Kumar.
The accused, Mohammad Hussain Kashim Khan, 47, residing at Gilbert Hill Road, Andheri West, confessed to the mobile phone theft. He was subsequently handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for further legal action, with a case registered against him. Investigations by Andheri GRP are ongoing.
An official noted, “This incident showcases the RPF’s efficient surveillance and rapid response to maintain passenger safety on railway premises.”
Mobile phone theft remains a significant issue in the Mumbai Suburban railway network, with 34 cases reported on July 29 alone, though only seven were solved. On average, over 20 mobile thefts occur daily in this section, often linked to interstate gangs involved in phone theft and chain snatching.
Recently, the GRP successfully busted gangs responsible for chain snatching and mobile theft, recovering numerous stolen phones and gold chains during operations.
