Delhi Police on Monday busted a snatching gang operating in Rohini and nearby areas, arresting seven people involved in stealing and trafficking stolen items. The accused included mediators and receivers who helped facilitate the crimes.
Police recovered 26 stolen mobile phones, a motorcycle used in crimes, a dismantled two-wheeler, and a laptop that was used to reprogram stolen devices from the accused.
The investigation began after a snatching incident on July 10 near NBC Bakery in Rohini Sector 6-7, where two motorcycle-borne assailants targeted a woman. A case was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) laws.
Two suspects, Pawan alias Lalla (25) and Abhitesh Gautam alias Cheedi (18), both residents of Karawal Nagar, were arrested first. Their interrogation led to the arrest of a mediator, Hemant alias Hemu (18).
The gang procured stolen bikes through Vitul (24), who had previous theft charges, and carried out snatchings with Diwakar Sharma alias Paltu (25), previously booked for robbery and attempted murder.
Stolen phones were distributed through Hemant to a receiver network. Further arrests include Atul (19), Vitul’s brother, and Babar Malik (34), a phone shop owner in Baghpat, UP. Authorities recovered four iPhones and a laptop used for tampering with IMEI numbers.
So far, 17 related cases have been resolved. The investigation is ongoing.
