A shocking case of betrayal emerged on Friday when a police constable and his friend were arrested for allegedly stealing 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a woman head constable’s house inside the Palayamkottai Armed Reserve quarters.

The accused have been identified as Manikandan (31), a constable with the Tirunelveli City Armed Reserve, and his accomplice Mohamed Asarudeen (30), a resident of Krishnapuram near Kadayanallur.

According to sources, the incident took place on July 16, when head constable Thangamari (40), who lives with her husband Rajkumar (45) and two daughters, returned home during her lunch break only to discover that her gold jewellery stored in a bureau was missing.

Following her complaint, the Perumalpuram police launched an investigation. Fingerprints were lifted by forensic experts, and CCTV footage revealed Asarudeen loitering suspiciously in the area. He was taken into custody.

During questioning, it was uncovered that Manikandan, who lived in the same police quarters, had closely monitored Thangamari’s daily routine. He allegedly coordinated with Asarudeen to execute the theft.

Both men are currently in custody, and further legal proceedings are underway.
