Emmanuel Akanpatiba Arrested in Motorbike Theft Ring Across Accra

ACCRA, Ghana – The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested Emmanuel Akanpatiba, a key suspect in a motorbike theft syndicate linked to a recent spike in thefts across the capital.

Akanpatiba was apprehended on June 24, after a resident of Madina reported the overnight theft of his red Royal motorbike. Based on intelligence, officers located the missing motorbike in the suspect’s possession. During questioning, Akanpatiba confessed to the theft and named Israel Fredrick Lomotey—currently on the run—as his accomplice.

Police investigations revealed a wider operation, with at least 12 reported motorbike thefts in Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie. The suspect told officers that stolen bikes were sold at the Agbogbloshie Onion Market to known buyers identified as Nurudeen, Ali, and Inusah.

According to police, Akanpatiba admitted to breaking the steering locks of motorbikes before transporting them to Agbogbloshie. The stolen bikes were sold for GH¢2,000 to GH¢3,000, depending on registration year.

Law enforcement officials say efforts are underway to apprehend Lomotey and the named receivers, and to recover additional stolen motorbikes.

The public is urged to secure their motorbikes, remain vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
