In a bold case of daytime theft, two young women were arrested on Sunday for stealing gold ornaments from a jewellery store located in Nagerbazar Sonapatty, ward number 22 of South Dum Dum Municipality.
The incident occurred at around 11:30 AM, when the duo entered the shop pretending to browse ornaments. During a brief moment of distraction by the store staff, the women managed to conceal two gold rings and a locket in their undergarments.
Jayanta Dutta, the shop owner, said the staff sensed something suspicious and asked the women to remain seated while they reviewed the CCTV footage, which clearly captured the act of theft. The shop doors were immediately locked, and Nagerbazar Police Station was informed.
The accused were identified as Trishita Chakraborty, a resident of Dum Dum Cantonment, and her relative Saheli Maity from East Midnapore. The stolen jewellery was recovered from their possession.
The two were produced in Barrackpore court on Sunday afternoon and have been remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. The incident has raised concerns about increasing incidents of shop thefts, especially involving disguised offenders.
