Bangkok police, led by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Siam Boonsom, have dismantled a motorcycle theft ring responsible for a string of nighttime vehicle thefts across the city.
On May 21, officers arrested 45-year-old Somsak, also known as Ood, and 40-year-old Ting Ko Ko Oo in Soi Lat Phrao 119, located in the Khlong Chan area of Bang Kapi district. The suspects were caught with four stolen motorcycles and numerous motorcycle spare parts.
The investigation was launched after a motorcycle was reported stolen on April 24 in the Samran Rat district. CCTV footage captured two individuals, wearing long-sleeved jackets, jeans, and full-face helmets, stealing a motorcycle and fleeing towards Soi Lat Phrao 119.
Surveillance and targeted patrolling in the area eventually led police to the suspects. During interrogation, Somsak and Ting Ko Ko Oo admitted to multiple motorcycle thefts. Their method involved using a customized metal spike to break ignitions and then riding off with the bikes.
They typically operated at night, targeting homes, dormitories, and rental properties. After stealing the motorcycles, the gang dismantled them in Soi Nawamin 47 and sold the parts in Mae Sot, Tak province, near the Myanmar border.
Their most recent theft spree included three motorcycles stolen in a single night from areas under the Pratunam Chulalongkorn, Samrong Tai, and Prachachuen Police Stations.
The suspects have been charged with theft and are now in the custody of Samran Rat district investigators, according to KhaoSod.
In a related crackdown, police also arrested members of another motorcycle theft gang on May 7. This group was linked to cross-border smuggling of stolen motorcycles. The operation led by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom resulted in the capture of three suspects, including Wuichai, alias Kee, who had a prior criminal record for drug-related offenses.
Police warn the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
