Benito Delgado, 35, of Joliet, was charged with robbing a BMO bank in downtown Joliet after claiming he needed the money for vehicle repairs and that the “universe owed him money,” according to prosecutors.
Delgado, who was already in the Kendall County jail for an unrelated traffic case, was identified by detectives as the suspect in Monday’s robbery at 78 N. Chicago St. in Joliet. After being transferred to the Joliet Police Department for questioning, Delgado was confronted with video evidence linking him to the crime.
When asked to explain his actions, Delgado reportedly said that he needed the money to fix his vehicle and mentioned that the “universe owed him money.”
At 1:45 p.m. on Monday, Delgado allegedly entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding $30,000 in cash, specifically in $100 bills. The teller provided him with $2,700 after counting the bills aloud. Delgado agreed that the amount was acceptable, took the money, and fled the scene in a vehicle. The teller then activated the holdup alarm, notifying coworkers of the robbery.
Officers later tracked Delgado’s vehicle through surveillance footage, which led them to his apartment on Bluff Street.
Delgado now faces charges of financial institution robbery, burglary, and theft in Will County. His next court date is scheduled for May 8.
