A student at South Central High School in Greenville, North Carolina, was arrested on Tuesday morning after a gun was found on school property.
The incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when a school resource officer received a tip that a student was carrying a firearm on campus. Authorities say 18-year-old Jeremiah Lett was found in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun inside his backpack.
Lett was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on educational property and carrying a concealed weapon. He was subsequently jailed with a bond set at $5,000.
Pitt County Schools confirmed that Lett will face disciplinary actions in accordance with the district’s Student Code of Conduct. The discovery of the firearm prompted heightened safety measures on campus, although no injuries were reported.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the possession of the weapon on school grounds.
