On September 17, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department (RRPD) received a fraud report from a local business. The business provided documents and contracts to lead Investigator S. Bryant, which led to suspicions against Marvin Hobbs Jr., 28, of Roanoke Rapids.
Hobbs allegedly paid for services with a personal check, but later stopped payment after the services were completed. The business, which lost $700, made multiple attempts to recover the payment, all of which were unsuccessful. Eventually, the RRPD was notified, and Hobbs was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses.
On October 7, Hobbs turned himself in to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. He did not receive a bond due to an outstanding false pretense charge in Wake County. Hobbs is scheduled to appear in court on October 24.
