by Sophia Bennett

Two individuals have been arrested following an extensive investigation into the theft of grave and historical site markers across several northern Iowa counties, including Franklin, Butler, and Cerro Gordo.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, reports of missing cemetery markers started coming in about a month ago from both rural and city cemeteries. These thefts prompted an investigation, which ultimately led to the execution of two search warrants on Friday afternoon. The warrants were carried out at residences on 4th Avenue Northwest in Hampton and Pine Street in Dumont.

As a result, two suspects were charged. Brandon Smith, 44, of Hampton, was charged with Theft in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the First Degree, and Theft in the Fourth Degree. Lauren Johnson, 34, of Dumont, was charged with Theft in the First Degree.

Authorities have identified two additional suspects, and charges related to the thefts are expected.
