Warrant Issued for Victoriano Cayetano Leon in Fuel Theft Case

Judge orders arrest after Leon fails to appear in court

by Sophia Bennett

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Victoriano Cayetano Leon, 42, after he failed to appear for his court hearing on Wednesday in connection with a major fuel theft in Steamboat Springs.

Leon was arrested on December 13, 2024, and charged with felony theft, conspiracy, third-degree burglary, and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was allegedly involved in a fuel theft operation, where he spent over an hour filling a truck with fuel at a local gas station, suspiciously long for a 300-gallon load.

Despite claiming the need for 300 gallons to fill a semi-truck, law enforcement suspects Leon stole around 500 gallons. His bond was initially set at $7,500 but was later reduced to $5,000. He was released from jail after paying the lower bond.

Leon failed to attend his scheduled status conference on January 10, 2025. His lawyer requested that the arrest warrant be delayed until his next court date in Denver, but Judge Erin Wilson denied the request, setting a new $10,000 bond for the warrant.

Two other men, David Caboverde and Osnel Perez Palacio, remain in custody related to the fuel theft case. Perez Palacio is scheduled for court on January 22, while Caboverde’s hearing is set for January 29.
