The Delhi Police have solved a major jewellery theft case involving over Rs6 crore in stolen valuables, following the arrest of Asadul Mondal from Hooghly, West Bengal. Mondal was apprehended on Saturday, and 953 grams of gold jewellery was recovered from his possession.
The case came to light when Sanjay Goyal, a jewellery dealer from Karol Bagh, reported the theft of 2.7 kilograms of gold jewellery worth Rs1.9 crore. Mondal, a skilled artisan specializing in polishing and stone-setting, had been entrusted with the jewellery for repair and preparation before an exhibition in Rajasthan. However, Mondal vanished on December 17, taking the jewellery with him.
The investigation expanded after another jewellery dealer, Ravikant, filed a second complaint. He revealed that Mondal had also absconded with 5.5 kilograms of gold jewellery valued at ₹3.9 crore and diamonds worth Rs40 lakh. Mondal had been operating from a rented workshop in Karol Bagh, where he was known as a reliable craftsman.
Utilizing traditional investigative methods and technical surveillance, Delhi Police tracked Mondal’s movements across several states, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal. The breakthrough came when police analyzed call records, pinpointing Mondal’s location near Vivekanand College in Haripal, Hooghly. A police operation led to Mondal’s arrest on December 21, and the recovered items confirmed they were part of the stolen jewellery.
Mondal, originally from Hooghly, had come to Delhi to work in the jewellery sector. Trusted by local dealers, he allegedly conspired with associates to steal valuable jewellery. After his arrest, Mondal was produced before a court in West Bengal and was later transferred to Karol Bagh Police custody for further investigation.
