A man named Rajesh Vajpayee (52) was arrested on Friday from Banda, Uttar Pradesh, for stealing cash and jewellery from the residence of Crime Branch’s police station in-charge, Ashok Maravi. The theft occurred at Maravi’s house, and the police acted quickly after a complaint was filed.
The crime was reported to the Habibganj police, who formed an investigation team. They reviewed CCTV footage and gathered information from informants, which led them to identify Vajpayee, who had traveled from outside Bhopal. The police team tracked down the accused, and upon interrogation, Vajpayee admitted to the theft after initially providing conflicting answers.
Vajpayee, who had a criminal history, including a life sentence for murder, had reportedly planned his escape. After failing to rob in Indore, he made his way to Bhopal, staying in night shelters and lodges while searching for targets. After finding that Maravi’s house was empty, Vajpayee stole Rs1.5 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs1 lakh.
Police revealed that Vajpayee had difficulty moving due to a rod in his leg, making him seek easier targets. After his arrest, the stolen items were recovered, and further investigations are underway.
