Jovany Portades Arrested in Connection to SF BART Station Attack

Portades, with a criminal history, allegedly slashed a woman’s throat

by Sophia Bennett

Jovany Portades, a suspect in a violent attack at the 24th Street Mission BART Station, was arrested on Sunday afternoon at the Fruitvale BART Station after his photo was circulated following the Saturday morning assault. The victim, a 54-year-old woman, had her throat slashed as the Antioch-bound train arrived at the station. Portades fled the scene on foot, and BART police closed the station briefly for evidence collection.

Portades has a significant criminal history, including past arrests for robbery, drug possession, and weapon-related charges. His most recent arrest was in January for robbery, but the case was dismissed following a plea deal. Portades has also faced multiple charges over the years, such as drug sales, vehicle theft, and robbery. His history includes several felony convictions.

This is reportedly Portades’s first alleged violent crime. The victim, who was hospitalized in serious condition after the attack, has not been identified, and the motive remains unclear.

Anyone with further information about the attack or the suspect is encouraged to contact the BART Police Investigations tip line at 510-464-7011.
