In a major breakthrough, the Coimbatore police arrested K. Anbalagan, a 50-year-old man from Sivaganga, for allegedly cheating members of a women self-help group (SHG) based in Sulur. The man had duped the group of Rs10 lakh by falsely promising to arrange a Rs6.75 crore loan for them.
The arrest came after a complaint was lodged by M. Johncy, a 31-year-old resident of AS Nagar, Pattanam near Sulur. According to the complaint, Anbalagan convinced the members of the SHG that he could secure a substantial loan amount for their business. However, after receiving the Rs10 lakh as processing fees, Anbalagan failed to fulfill his promises.
Anbalagan, who hails from Kalanivasal in Sivaganga district, was apprehended based on the detailed complaint filed by Johncy. The police have launched an investigation to uncover further details about the fraud and ascertain if there were more victims involved.
This arrest highlights a growing concern of fraud targeting vulnerable groups, particularly women self-help groups, with criminals exploiting their financial needs. The police have assured that further action will be taken to ensure the accused faces legal consequences.
