Alonzo Wiatt Sansbury, 56, of Indianapolis, has been sentenced to ten years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to commercial robbery and attempted commercial robbery, as announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana.
Court documents reveal that on May 17, 2024, Sansbury attempted to rob a Dollar Tree store on North Keystone Avenue in Indianapolis. During the robbery attempt, he threatened employees with force, causing fear, and the incident was captured on video surveillance.
A few hours later, Sansbury committed a second robbery at a Big Lots store on North Allisonville Road, using an object he implied was a firearm to demand cash. This second robbery was also recorded by surveillance cameras.
Sansbury has a long criminal history dating back to 1989, with prior convictions for burglary, theft, and robbery. He had been discharged from parole for a prior robbery conviction less than a year before committing these offenses.
Zachary A. Myers, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, stated, “Repeat, violent criminals are a top target for federal prosecution and face significant punishment in federal court.” He commended the work of the FBI, IMPD, and federal prosecutors in ensuring that Sansbury will be off the streets for the next decade.
