Kanpur police have solved a high-value theft case in the Barra police station area, recovering stolen property worth around Rs 15 lakh and arresting four accused. The suspects allegedly spent the stolen money on expensive mobile phones, a sports bike, and a trip to Manali.
According to DCP South Deependra Nath Chaudhary, the arrests were made early Monday near Patrasa Bridge, aided by CCTV footage and surveillance inputs. The arrested individuals are Prakash Gautam (Barra village), Ishu Gautam and Abhishek Gautam (Ravidaspuram), and Ajay Rajput (Gujjaini). Another accused, Robin, remains absconding.
Police recovered stolen jewellery, cash, and foreign currency, including 81 US dollars and 15 dirhams. During interrogation, the suspects admitted using part of the loot to purchase a sports bike worth Rs 4.5 lakh (bought for Rs 1.5 lakh), luxury mobile phones, and fund a trip to Manali.
The theft was reported by Satish Pandey, a marketing manager from Barra-8, whose house was unoccupied from January 12 to February 1 while he and his parents visited Lucknow. Upon returning, they found the lock broken and valuables, including jewellery worth nearly Rs 15 lakh, missing. A case was registered at Gujjaini police station, launching the investigation.
Police records show Prakash has seven prior cases, Ishu and Abhishek three each, and Ajay one. The accused admitted to committing thefts to support an extravagant lifestyle. Investigators noted Ishu’s fascination with vehicles, spending approximately Rs 13,000 to modify the stolen bike. Police continue to search for the absconding accused and are probing other crimes linked to the gang.
