In a swift crackdown, the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) apprehended three individuals involved in a high-profile robbery near Berhampur railway station, where miscreants posed as CBI officials and stole valuables from passengers.
The incident came to light after a complaint on February 26 by Husmukh Jain (43) of Visakhapatnam. He reported that he and his associate, Khima Ram, were intercepted outside the station by two unknown persons who claimed to be CBI officers. Under the guise of an inquiry, the imposters stole a bag containing 33 gold ornaments weighing over 800 grams, two mobile phones, Aadhaar, PAN and ATM cards, and a driving licence before fleeing the scene.
A joint GRP-RPF investigation launched a multi-state operation, targeting locations in Visakhapatnam and towns across Rajasthan including Jodhpur, Samdari, Balotra, and Majivala. The operation led to the arrest of Narendra Kumar (24), Poonam Chand (55), and Jitu Choudhary (28), all from Rajasthan, with the stolen gold recovered from their possession.
Authorities are actively pursuing five more absconding suspects: Meethalal (28), Balakram (29), Khetu Ram (28), Mahendra Kumar Prajapat (28), and Dinesh, also from Rajasthan.
The operation was led by Aparesh Behera, Crime Inspector, Khurda Road GRP, along with C V Ramana, IIC of RPF Berhampur, and Biswanath Mallick, SI of Berhampur GRPS. A case has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and investigations continue to dismantle the interstate crime network.
