The head priest and dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is facing criminal charges after allegedly stealing more than $1,000 worth of baseball cards from a Walmart store.
Authorities said Aidan Smith, 42, was arrested on Feb. 27 after leaving a Walmart in Economy Borough, Pennsylvania, located just outside Pittsburgh. Police said Smith allegedly concealed 27 packs of baseball cards under his clothing and inside a cardboard box before exiting the store.
According to court records, Smith was charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property. Police responded after Walmart security reported that Smith had returned to the store despite allegedly stealing from the same location in previous days.
Investigators said store surveillance footage showed Smith taking baseball cards during four earlier visits and leaving without paying. The total value of the stolen merchandise was estimated at $1,099.99, authorities said.
In a message to members of the cathedral, Ketlen Solak, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh, said church officials would conduct their own review and follow church procedures related to clergy misconduct. She also asked members of the congregation to keep Smith and his family in their prayers.
The bishop’s message noted that Smith had already been placed on administrative leave in late January, though the reason was not specified. Smith’s defense attorney declined to comment on the case.
