JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. — A man from the Mohawk Valley has been arrested for allegedly stealing seventeen cattle from two farmers in Jefferson County.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, a farmer in the town of Ellisburg reported in January that four Holstein calves were missing. Another farmer in Ellisburg reported the disappearance of thirteen Holstein heifers. The total value of the stolen livestock was estimated at $20,000.
Tips from local citizens helped authorities identify and arrest 35-year-old Brett Bruneau of Mohawk. He was charged with grand larceny and burglary, both felonies. Bruneau was arraigned and released Wednesday night, with a court date set for April 1.
Investigators say the stolen cattle were likely offloaded soon after the theft and are no longer traceable.
