In a significant crackdown on organized crime, the East Guwahati Police District (EGPD) team from Basistha Police Station in Assam apprehended a gang allegedly involved in circulating Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) and plotting a dacoity in the city. The operation, confirmed on Monday evening, prevented a major criminal act.

“The EGPD team acted swiftly on credible intelligence, preventing a serious crime and striking at the menace of fake currency. Such operations will continue with full force,” said a senior police official.

The raid was conducted at Koinadhara in Khanapara based on specific intelligence, leading to the arrest of seven suspected dacoits and the seizure of FICN worth Rs 98,500, along with weapons and vehicles. Police intercepted two vehicles—a Swift (AS07X1666) and a Scorpio (AS02AG7901)—during the late-night operation.

On searching the vehicles, authorities recovered fake currency, bamboo sticks, mobile phones, airbags, and other incriminating items, all seized following legal procedures.

The arrested individuals were identified as Mahammad Ali (37) of Laluk, Jakir Hussain (28) of Bihpuria, Suruj Ali (49) of Laluk, Ainul Haque (32) of Tezpur, Allaluddin (41) of Rupohi, and Amir Hussain (34) of Kochua. Police confirmed that the gang was preparing to commit a dacoity when intercepted.

Legal action has been initiated, and investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the fake currency and uncover potential links to larger FICN networks.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP Assam Police praised the EGPD team for its swift and coordinated action, marking another success in Assam Police’s crackdown on organized crime and counterfeit currency operations across the state
