Latur, Maharashtra: The Latur Police Crime Branch has arrested a woman, Poonam Jitu Kamble (34), for allegedly stealing gold ornaments at bus stands across the district. Some of the stolen jewellery was also recovered during the operation.
Police said the arrest has helped uncover several theft cases reported at bus stands in Ausa, Shirur Tajband, and Ahmedpur. The accused reportedly targeted women passengers by taking advantage of the crowd while they were boarding buses.
Acting on a tip-off on March 4, the crime branch intensified surveillance near the new bus stand at Renapur Naka. Two women were reportedly moving suspiciously near passengers. Upon verification, police laid a trap and apprehended Poonam Kamble.
During a search conducted by a woman police constable, a gold mangalsutra and a gold chain totaling 13.390 grams—worth Rs78,951—were recovered.
During interrogation, Kamble confessed that she and another woman had been systematically stealing gold ornaments from women passengers at various bus stands in Latur over the past several months.
The case is under further investigation to identify and apprehend the second accomplice.
