Police in Kodakara arrested a 26-year-old woman, Soorya, for allegedly stealing 12 sovereigns of gold from the house of a priest.
The incident occurred on February 16 at the residence of Ajesh, a priest and native of Moolamkudam. According to police, the accused befriended the priest by visiting his home frequently for poojas and seeking help with personal problems.
During one such visit, while the priest went to the kitchen, Soorya allegedly took gold ornaments weighing 12 sovereigns from a cupboard. Investigators said she later sold the stolen gold at a private institution in Kodakara. The accused used the proceeds to buy new gold jewellery, household appliances, and to redeem her own pledged jewellery.
At the time of her arrest, Soorya was reportedly wearing some of the stolen ornaments. Police said the case had no initial clues, and scientific investigation methods were used to identify and apprehend her.
The operation was led by Kodakara Police Inspector Jerlin V. Scaria, along with other officers. Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to recover the remaining stolen property and examine any possible accomplices.
