The Simanta Santosh Samanta was arrested by the Chinchwad Police on Sunday for allegedly stealing 245 grams of gold worth Rs 22 lakh from a Chinchwad-based jeweller. The gold had been entrusted to him for melting into ornaments.
Samanta, a goldsmith residing on the 4th floor of the building housing the jewellery store, allegedly committed the theft in just 10 minutes. Police, led by Sub-Inspector Kiran Balip, apprehended him before he could flee to his hometown in West Bengal. Samanta has been remanded to police custody until February 18.
According to the officer, the jeweller had noticed minor shortages of gold over the past 10 months. A recent audit revealed a deficit of 245g worth Rs 22 lakh, leading him to suspect Samanta’s involvement. Upon receiving the complaint, police quickly located Samanta in his room as he was preparing to leave the city. Authorities are in the process of recovering the stolen gold.
