DEKALB COUNTY, Ala. — A California man was arrested Monday in DeKalb County after authorities discovered over 600 gallons of diesel fuel in a U-Haul van.
Michael Alvarez, 42, of Los Angeles, was pulled over by a deputy on Highway 117 in Mentone. Officers noticed the van was hauling large tanks of diesel fuel stowed improperly, prompting a search.
Investigators also found a bag containing electrical switches, wiring, remotes, and battery packs, raising suspicions given the unusually large fuel load. Alvarez reportedly did not have a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or the proper documentation to legally transport fuel in Alabama.
Further investigation revealed Alvarez was allegedly involved in a sophisticated multi-state diesel fuel theft scheme, where he hijacked fuel pumps at truck stops along the East Coast, traveling from New Jersey down to Alabama to obtain diesel without paying.
Alvarez was arrested and charged with:
Felony Unlawful Motor Vehicle Fuel Transport
Receiving Stolen Property – 1st Degree
Possession of Burglary Tools
The Department of Homeland Security has been notified and is assisting with the ongoing investigation. Authorities indicate that additional charges may be forthcoming as the case develops.
