ANIGUA — A man with 54 previous arrests and a pending felony case was charged Monday with retail theft after allegedly stealing eight cans of butane from a local store, according to court records.
Craig Chiguina Brewer, 46, was accused of taking two four-packs of butane, valued at $5.49 each, from M Market on Sunday morning. The theft went unnoticed by store staff but was captured on surveillance cameras.
Authorities said Brewer returned to the store barefoot and later attempted to leave wearing slippers taken from the back of the store. A worker observed him inhaling butane outside. Brewer denied being in the store and claimed the person in the video was not him.
Brewer, who already faces a pending felony for theft and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, was charged with retail theft as a petty misdemeanor and held on $500 cash bail.
