Delhi Citizens Foil Robberies, Help Police Catch Suspects

Quick thinking stops thefts in Mukherjee Nagar & RK Puram

Delhi: Two Delhi residents displayed remarkable presence of mind last week, foiling separate theft attempts and aiding police investigations.

In Mukherjee Nagar, IT professional Kunal Irungbam (26), a resident of Sant Nagar originally from Manipur, was travelling to GTB Nagar in an e-rickshaw around 11:30 am on January 29 when two men on a motorcycle attempted to snatch his iPhone. Reacting instantly, Irungbam grabbed the pillion rider’s collar, causing the bike to skid and both men to fall. Passers-by restrained the pillion rider while the driver escaped.

Police arrested the man, identified as Sohail (24) from Jahangirpuri. Sohail revealed that the driver who fled was Samad, also from the same area. An FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and police continue to search for the second suspect.

In RK Puram, Mohar Singh (60), an NDMC pump operator, was confronted on January 26 by three men on a motorcycle near the ARD Complex. Initially mistaking them for people asking directions, Singh realized they were attempting a robbery when the pillion rider brandished a knife and another searched his pockets for cash.

Thinking quickly, Singh struck the assailants with his helmet, forcing all three to abandon the robbery and flee. He also noted down their motorcycle registration before alerting police. RK Puram police have registered a case and are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

Last month, several Delhi residents—including three friends in Ashok Nagar—similarly intervened to stop crimes, highlighting the role of vigilant citizens in supporting law enforcement.
