In a dramatic incident, an accused arrested in a two-wheeler theft case escaped from the lock-up of Navghar police station in Bhayander East on Sunday morning, triggering an immediate manhunt. The accused was, however, rearrested within a few hours from Mumbai, police said.
The accused has been identified as Abdul Majid Maniyar, a resident of Azad Nagar, Bhayander East. He was arrested by Navghar police on January 31 in connection with a two-wheeler theft case and was placed in police remand until February 2.
According to police sources, Maniyar managed to flee from the police lock-up during the early hours of Sunday. Upon discovering the escape, senior officers were alerted and multiple teams were formed to trace his movements.
Using technical surveillance and local intelligence, police tracked the accused to Mumbai and successfully nabbed him within hours, preventing a prolonged escape.
Officials said an inquiry has been initiated to determine how the accused managed to escape from custody, and departmental action may follow if lapses are found. Further investigation into the theft case and the escape incident is underway.
