In a recent crackdown on impersonators, the Ahmedabad Crime Branch arrested Mehul Shah, a man accused of posing as an IAS officer for personal gain. Shah, who hails from Morbi, allegedly used forged documents to present himself as a senior official in order to exploit individuals and businesses.
The arrest came after a complaint was filed by a car rental service provider. Shah reportedly contacted the provider, claiming to be the Director of the Revenue Department and an IAS officer. He submitted forged documents, including a fake letter from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Department of Science and Research, demanding that a siren and curtains be installed in the vehicle he wished to rent.
Inspector J.K. Makwana of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch confirmed that Shah was apprehended swiftly following the complaint. Police seized a number of incriminating documents and electronic devices from Shah’s possession, which they are now analyzing.
Investigations suggest that Mehul Shah has been using his fabricated IAS persona to defraud multiple individuals. He allegedly offered fake job opportunities, convincing victims to pay large sums of money amounting to lakhs of rupees under the pretense of securing government positions. Shah is also believed to have created counterfeit documents bearing the names of various government departments, including a forged letterhead that listed him as the Chairman of the Department of Science and Research Development.
The authorities have launched an expanded investigation to uncover the full extent of Shah’s fraudulent activities. His mobile phones, laptops, and other devices are being thoroughly examined for additional evidence. Police are also working to identify other victims and determine the total amount of money Shah extorted through his impersonation scheme.
