Detectives in Nairobi have arrested two suspects linked to an inter-country mobile phone theft syndicate, recovering over 900 stolen phones in the process.
Officers from Nairobi Central Sub-County conducted an intelligence-led operation along Charles Rubia Street near the Buscar bus stage in the city’s Central Business District, leading to the arrests.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that two packages being transported to Uganda were intercepted, revealing a large consignment of stolen mobile devices.
Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects are part of a broader syndicate responsible for stealing phones from the public and retail outlets, which are then trafficked to neighboring countries for resale.
The suspects, identified as Brian Yomasia and Stephen Okwachi Shisia, were taken into custody after failing to explain possession of the stolen phones. They are currently being processed at Nairobi Central Police Station ahead of their court arraignment.
The DCI noted that this recovery follows a previous operation on January 24, 2026, during which more than 150 stolen phones were seized.
Investigations are ongoing as authorities pursue other individuals believed to be involved in the syndicate.
