Pune rural police arrested four individuals, including a police constable, after seizing 9.6 kg of a suspected narcotic substance, officials said on Tuesday.
The crackdown followed the earlier seizure of 1.5 kg of suspected drugs worth about Rs 2 crore from 41-year-old Shadab Shaikh by Shirur police on January 17. Authorities are yet to confirm whether the drugs were mephedrone or alprazolam.
“During Shaikh’s questioning, the names of Dnyandeo Shinde, Rushikesh Chittar, and Mahesh Gaikwad surfaced. Subsequent searches led to the seizure of 9.6 kg of narcotics from them,” said a police official, without specifying the exact drug.
Investigations revealed that Chittar had allegedly obtained the substance from Shyamsundar Gujar, a constable stationed in Ahilyanagar.
“Gujar reportedly stole the narcotics from seized property in a previous case and sold it to Chittar,” the official added. Police confirmed that the probe is ongoing.
