A Sanford man and woman are in jail after deputies accused them of stealing utility lines in Lee County.
Trevor Dillon Phillips, 34, and Carla Kathleen Smith, 32, were arrested Thursday after authorities say they cut utility cables along Wilkins Drive near Boone Trail Road. Deputies discovered an unoccupied car at around 4 a.m. containing a roll of cut wires and cables, along with tools commonly used to cut utility lines.
While searching the area, deputies found a section of cable and wires hanging from a nearby utility pole. Phillips and Smith were located hiding in a wooded area nearby and taken into custody.
Both face multiple charges, including theft of utility cables and wires and damage to utility infrastructure within the City of Sanford’s jurisdiction.
Deputies also linked the pair to a similar incident on Tuesday, January 13, along Steel Bridge Road, resulting in additional charges.
Phillips and Smith were turned over to the Sanford Police Department and are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, February 11.
