FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary that occurred earlier this month in Ester, according to the Alaska State Troopers.
Troopers arrested Joshua Reed, 37, and Caitlin Kutina, 36, at approximately 10 a.m. Friday following an investigation into a series of thefts at a residence and nearby shop.
During the investigation, troopers located four vehicles, approximately 20 firearms, and recovered 40 ounces of stolen gold. With gold valued at roughly $5,000 per ounce, authorities estimate the recovered gold to be worth nearly $200,000.
Investigators believe the suspects systematically looted the property between early December and early January, causing an additional $100,000 in property damage, according to troopers.
Both Reed and Kutina were charged with first-degree theft. Reed is being held on $500,000 bail, while Kutina’s bail was set at $100,000. Troopers said additional charges are expected.
Authorities are still searching for a third suspect, Benjamin Cross, who is considered armed and dangerous. Cross is believed to have connections in both Fairbanks and Anchorage.
A search of Cross’ property allegedly uncovered 13 stolen firearms. He is wanted on a $500,000 warrant for burglary, theft, and misconduct involving a weapon.
Another individual previously sought in the investigation, 44-year-old Gene Utley, is no longer being pursued, troopers said.
