Kondhwa Police have arrested a five-member gang accused of luring young men through dating apps and robbing them. The suspects reportedly gained victims’ trust online, arranging late-night meetings before threatening them to extort money and valuables.
Police reported that on January 11, the gang contacted a young man via a dating app and convinced him to meet at night. During the encounter, the gang brandished a machete, stole his mobile phone and jewellery, and forced him to withdraw cash from an ATM.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rohil Aqeel Shaikh (19), Nuhan Naim Shaikh (18), Shahid Shahanur Momin (25), Ishan Nisar Shaikh (25), and Wahid Dastagir Shaikh (18), residents of Kondhwa and nearby areas. A case has been registered at Kondhwa Police Station.
Police traced the suspects using CCTV footage, mobile call records, and technical analysis. Acting on specific information from officers Pushpendra Chavan and Suhas More, the gang was apprehended in Kondhwa.
During the investigation, authorities recovered three mobile phones, a machete used in the crimes, and two two-wheelers. Further inquiry revealed the gang had committed similar offences at two other locations, prompting additional cases.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior police officials, including the Additional Commissioner of Police and Deputy Commissioner of Police of Pune.
Police have urged citizens, particularly young social media and dating app users, to exercise caution while interacting with strangers online.
