Hatigaon Police have arrested Rupjyoti Das, accused of orchestrating a large-scale car theft racket, following a complaint about a rented vehicle that was never returned.
The case began on January 1, when Mantu Goswami, a resident of Nazira, filed an FIR stating that a vehicle he had rented out was not returned. During the investigation, police traced the complaint to Rupjyoti Das of Bhetapara, originally from Kamalpur.
According to authorities, Das rented vehicles from multiple owners under the pretense of official work. He allegedly claimed to be a manager at HDFC Bank, stating that the vehicles were required for banking purposes. Instead of returning the cars, police allege that Das sold them to third parties, misrepresenting them as repossessed vehicles.
Investigations reveal that Das may have sold nearly 80 vehicles using this method. So far, police have recovered 12 vehicles—eight from Arunachal Pradesh and four from Assam. The search for the remaining vehicles continues.
Police suspect that Das may have had accomplices, though no additional arrests have been made so far. Rupjyoti Das remains in custody as further investigation into the racket is underway.
