by Ananya Mehta

In a significant crackdown, Guwahati Police arrested a four-member dacoity gang from Assam’s Barpeta district on Saturday night. The arrests were made following a late-night search operation at N.R. Residency in Sijubari, conducted by an EGPD team from Basistha Police Station based on specific intelligence.

The arrested gang members have been identified as Ainur Hussain (31), Edul Ali (24), Mahibul Ali (32), and Bipul Ahmed (38). Police said the gang had been carrying out robberies across Guwahati and neighbouring districts, targeting godowns, jewellery shops, and commercial establishments.

During the operation, authorities recovered multiple stolen items, including two Exide batteries, crime tools such as C-clamp, pliers, wrench, water pump plier, and a Maruti Suzuki Fronx (AS01-GG-3734) used as the getaway vehicle.

Sources confirmed that the accused admitted during interrogation to their involvement in several thefts and break-ins, helping police link them to a wider network of criminal activities.

Legal proceedings have been initiated, and investigations are ongoing to identify other associates and recover additional stolen property.

The development has been acknowledged by CM Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Police, and the DGP, highlighting another coordinated effort to curb organised crime in the state.
