by Ananya Mehta

A domestic worker, Hazeera Begum, and her husband Shabbir were arrested for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs1.37 crore from the home of a Sadashivanagar resident. The couple reportedly used the original house keys to open the locker while the family was away on a holiday, highlighting the risks of trusting home staff without proper background checks.

Hazeera Begum, a West Bengal native, had worked for Abhishek, the homeowner, for nearly four years. After resigning in 2024, she returned to the household on December 27, 2025, along with her husband, whom she had married just three months prior. Their familiarity with the family reportedly helped them regain trust quickly.

On December 30, Abhishek and his family left for Tamil Nadu. During their absence, the couple allegedly carried out a pre-planned robbery, opening the locker with the original keys and fleeing with nearly 900 grams of gold jewellery. The theft came to light when the family returned on December 31.

An FIR was promptly registered at Sadashivanagar Police Station, and investigators traced the couple back to West Bengal, leading to their arrest. Authorities successfully recovered the stolen gold jewellery, valued at Rs1.37 crore, from the accused.

This case serves as a cautionary tale about safeguarding valuables and conducting thorough checks on domestic staff.
