D’IBERVILLE, Miss. — An attempted robbery in D’Iberville turned deadly Monday night when the intended victim shot the would-be robber in self-defense, authorities say.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the 11000 block of Cinema Drive. Investigators said there was an arranged meeting between two people to buy electronic items. During the exchange, a third person appeared and attempted to rob the buyer. The buyer fired a gun in self-defense, striking the suspect.

The victim of the shooting, 25-year-old Tristain Young of Hattiesburg, was transported to a local emergency room, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer confirmed Young died around 9 p.m.

While at the scene, officers collected information about a fleeing vehicle and issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) to surrounding law enforcement. The vehicle was located by Biloxi Police Department, leading to the arrest of the driver, 26-year-old Ahmad Rasheed Hawthorne of Gulfport.

Hawthorne was charged with accessory before the fact to armed robbery and booked into the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
