Two Former JSO Employees Arrested for Theft, Battery

Jacksonville corrections and police officers face felony and misdemeanor charges

by Sophia Bennett

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) announced the arrest of two former employees this week: a corrections officer accused of battery and a police officer accused of grand theft.

Taaron Clayton, a former corrections officer, was arrested on Dec. 30, 2025, on one count of battery, a first-degree misdemeanor. JSO reported that Clayton allegedly exposed himself and grabbed the hips of a coworker. He was immediately terminated. Clayton had been employed for nine months and was still in his probationary period, so he did not have civil service protections.

Nicholas Hicks, a former police officer, was arrested on Jan. 6, 2026, on charges of grand theft and official misconduct, both third-degree felonies. JSO said Hicks was being paid to work at a hospital but failed to work more than 40 assigned shifts from June 12 to Dec. 30, 2025, totaling over 52 hours and receiving more than $2,600 in unearned wages. Hicks resigned immediately following his arrest.

Undersheriff Shawn Coarsey noted that Clayton’s arrest marks the seventh JSO employee arrest in 2025, while Hicks is the first in 2026.
