Malad police have arrested a housekeeping staff member for allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth Rs 26.5 lakh from a locked flat in Malad West. Authorities have successfully recovered the stolen items.
The complainant, Devang Shashikant Shah (36), reported that between December 11 and December 15, 2025, his family had locked the flat and gone out for dinner. During this period, approximately 185 grammes of gold jewellery were stolen from a cupboard in the complainant’s mother’s bedroom.
A crime detection team, led by Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Raivade, analyzed CCTV footage and gathered technical inputs, revealing that the suspect had closely observed the family’s movements and studied the flat’s layout. The accused, Anil Fugni Chaupal (34), reportedly had access to the cupboard key. On December 11, he allegedly entered the flat through a window and took the jewellery.
The suspect was apprehended, questioned at the police station, and later produced before the Borivli holiday court, which remanded him in custody. During interrogation, Chaupal confessed to the theft and returned the stolen gold.
The investigation involved Assistant Police Inspector Deepak Raivade, Head Constables Jaideep Juvatkar, John Fernandes, Mandar Gonjari, and Police Constables Sujay Shere, Samadhan Wagh, and Vikram Babar. Further inquiry is ongoing.
