Ramarajan Arrested for Murder of Elderly Woman in Tambaram

Police recover gold as accused confesses to killing

by Ananya Mehta

Two weeks after an elderly woman was brutally murdered for her gold jewellery, police have arrested a suspect in Tambaram. The accused, identified as Ramarajan, 45, was found in possession of two sovereigns of gold stolen from the victim.

The victim, Alangaram, 80, a resident of Nathanallur village, was discovered dead in her home on December 18, with severe head injuries. She had been living alone, while her children had visited her the previous evening and left after serving dinner.

Neighbours, noticing her prolonged absence the next morning, checked on her and found her lying in a pool of blood. The Walajabad police were informed immediately and sent the body to Chengalpet Government Hospital for autopsy.

Following an intensive investigation, police arrested Ramarajan, a resident of Bharathiyar Street in Nathanallur Colony. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to attacking Alangaram to steal her gold and money, taking advantage of the fact that she lived alone. Authorities also noted his involvement in a previous attempt-to-murder case last year.

Ramarajan has been produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody, while the investigation continues.
