In a dramatic case mirroring a Bollywood heist, Kendrapara police arrested six men who allegedly posed as Vigilance officers and looted the home of Dr Jalil Ahmad Khan, an 80-year-old retired physician, at Oldhi village in Derabishi block, Odisha.
The robbery took place on July 10, with the gang drawing inspiration from Akshay Kumar’s film Special 26. The accused entered Dr Khan’s residence under the pretext of conducting a Vigilance raid. After collecting the family’s mobile phones, they confined the victims to one area of the house and looted 500 grams of gold worth nearly Rs 50 lakh, along with Rs 1.5 lakh in cash.
A special investigation team led by Derabishi IIC Ambika Prasad Das cracked the case using CCTV footage and call detail records (CDRs). The arrested men were identified as:
Saraf Ali (35) and Prafulla Behera (43) – residents of Oldhi
Abhilas Nayak (20) – an engineering student from Poila village
Abu Jafar Khan (30) – of Garapur
Sk Raju – of Ranapada
Jakir Khan (41) – of Thakurapatana
They were booked under Sections 310 and 333 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and produced in court. Police recovered Rs 50,000 in cash, four mobile phones, two motorcycles, and various incriminating documents. Two additional suspects are on the run.
Dr Khan, formerly associated with a government medical college in Jamshedpur, currently operates a private clinic in his ancestral village.
