In a significant move against cybercrime, law enforcement has arrested 38 individuals in the past week for their involvement in various fraudulent activities. The cases include scams related to fake stock trading platforms, investment frauds, phishing traps, and bogus online tasks. Between May 3 and May 9, cyber police successfully solved 13 cases, recovering a total of Rs 42 lakh, according to an official statement.
The accused hail from different states across India, including Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh. Investigators revealed that many of the offenders were repeat criminals and that younger individuals were often exploited by cyber syndicates.
One notable case involved a Sector 14 resident who was swindled out of Rs 12 lakh by a woman posing as a textile worker on Facebook. She convinced him to invest in a fake stock trading platform. Two men, Rajesh (31) and Vinod (30) from Rewari, were arrested. Rajesh had sold his account to Vinod, who then passed it on to others. Rajesh is currently in judicial custody, while Vinod is in police remand.
In another case, a man from Faridabad lost Rs 1.12 crore after joining WhatsApp groups that offered stock market tips. He was instructed to use the Motilal Oswal and Angel One Group apps for investment. Police arrested Ajit (29) and Vivek from Surat, the latter of whom converted the stolen funds into cryptocurrency. Officers also recovered several items, including 86 signed blank cheques, 15 debit cards, 10 passbooks, and five mobile phones.
A third case involved a resident from Sector 49, who was tricked out of Rs 30.5 lakh after responding to an Instagram ad that promised high returns from IPO investments. The accused, Kunal Rajput (22) and Radhe Shyam Mahana (25) from Morena, Madhya Pradesh, were arrested after selling their bank accounts to fraudsters. Both are under police remand.
In a fourth case, a victim joined a Telegram group offering money for completing online tasks, only to lose Rs 6.8 lakh. The perpetrators, Deepak (20) and Abhishek (20) from Jodhpur, were arrested, though only Rs 6,100 was traced in the account.
The cyber teams’ efforts have led to the recovery of Rs 42.05 lakh, and they have also addressed 142 complaints, helping victims recover a total of Rs 28,908.
