CEBU CITY, Philippines — A 32-year-old mother, known only by the alias “Rosie,” was arrested for allegedly shoplifting seven bottles of lotion valued at P1,729 from a department store on Colon Street on September 3.

The suspect was apprehended around 2:00 p.m. after store security noticed her suspicious behavior. A house detective intervened, conducting a citizen’s arrest before handing her over to the Carbon Police Station.

Police Staff Sergeant Jimson Dapar confirmed on September 5 that theft charges have been filed against Rosie. Store personnel reported her uneasy demeanor heightened their suspicions, leading to her apprehension.

During questioning, Rosie admitted to stealing the items due to financial difficulties. She said she planned to sell the lotion to purchase medicine. She also shared that she has four children being cared for by her mother, while her husband in Mindanao does not provide financial support.

Authorities noted that Rosie has no history of drug involvement, but this is not her first shoplifting offense. She underwent inquest proceedings on the day of her arrest and is currently detained at the Carbon Police Station, awaiting transfer to Camp Sotero Cabahug in Gorordo, Cebu City.

Police stressed that despite poverty often being a factor, shoplifting remains a crime punishable by law.
