MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Three women have been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $90,000 from an 88-year-old woman with dementia, according to Memphis police.
The case came to light after an employee at Memphis City Employee Credit Union noticed suspicious activity. The bank worker alerted authorities when she saw that the elderly woman’s account had lost $52,000 in just four months.
Investigators say the victim, who suffers from dementia, had given power of attorney to Sally Baggott, while Melissa Stewart and Jennifer McLemore served as her caregivers. All three had access to her bank account and were expected to manage her care and make purchases for essential needs.
Instead, from 2023 to 2024, the three women are accused of misusing the funds for personal expenses, including buying a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, and making purchases from Amazon, Temu, and even Memphis Grizzlies merchandise.
The total financial loss reported was $91,452.
All three suspects — Baggott, Stewart, and McLemore — have been arrested and are facing charges of:
Theft of Property
Identity Theft
Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Person
Authorities continue to investigate the extent of the financial abuse. The credit union’s timely alert is being praised for helping uncover the crime and protect one of the community’s most vulnerable individuals.
