In a major crackdown on organized vehicle theft, Guwahati Police arrested three individuals from Manipur in connection with a self-drive rental car theft racket. The trio allegedly kidnapped a driver and stole a Mahindra Thar they had rented.
The vehicle, bearing registration number AS 01FQ 0969, was taken on rent by the accused, who later changed the number plate and rendered the driver untraceable. Police believe the gang’s modus operandi involves renting four-wheelers and smuggling them into Manipur for resale.
A case was registered at Dispur police station, and during investigation, Guwahati police successfully tracked down and arrested the three accused from Tinsukia. All three hail from Imphal East, Manipur:
Akoijam Universe (27)
Achom Winner Meitei (26)
Thomnojam Samananda Singh (25)
They were brought to Dispur police station for further questioning in connection with the case.
Authorities say this arrest marks a significant breakthrough in dismantling a larger inter-state racket involving stolen self-drive rental cars. Investigations are ongoing to trace the missing driver and identify more members of the network.
