KULA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – A beloved local business in Upcountry Maui was targeted in a recent burglary, prompting the owners to speak out about the rise in crime and demand tougher consequences for offenders.
Kula Hardware and Nursery, the only nursery and hardware store in the area, has been proudly run by the Taylor family for 24 years. Known for serving their tight-knit community, the family is now grappling with the emotional and financial aftermath of a break-in.
Last Friday, three suspects broke into the business, stealing hundreds of dollars in merchandise and causing thousands in property damage.
“They grabbed a big trash can and they put it right here and they just swiped all of it,” said Laci Taylor, the store’s general manager.
The suspects — Jordan Bibbs (27), Kiilani Kalawe (21), and Shayna Furtado (27) — were arrested by Maui police and have been charged with criminal property damage, burglary, theft, and multiple firearms offenses. Sources say a loaded shotgun was recovered during their arrest.
“It’s scary for one, and for two, when you walk in and you just see your livelihood… your heart and soul is in your business,” said Taylor. “It’s heartbreaking.”
Police sources also confirmed that several illegal firearms have been recovered across the island in recent days.
Taylor expressed gratitude to law enforcement and prosecutors for their swift response but emphasized that stricter penalties are needed to deter future crimes, especially as similar break-ins affect other local businesses.
“All of the unfortunate break-ins at so many local businesses recently… it kind of puts into everybody’s mind that maybe there does need to be stricter consequences.”
Despite the damage and loss, the Taylor family remains committed to serving the Upcountry Maui community — but they hope more can be done to protect small businesses from becoming easy targets.
